Tuesday’s Inspiration #7- Donnie Darko

As an avid movie watcher, I have to say the first time I watched Donnie Darko it completely blew my mind. Everything about how the film was captured, how well the music fitted and how brilliant the actors were captured me. This dark, deep film would definitely be one of my favourites. But one of my favourite things about this movie would be how quotable it is; this film is bursting full of ingenious lines, and it is with one of those that I want to inspire you with this week. Think about this quote, one of my favourites in the movie:

‘Every living creature on Earth dies alone.’

I want you to think about this quote, take it apart, analyse it and put it back together. And then I want you to write. Write a short story, poem or monologue either using this quote as the title or as a line within the piece. That is your only rule- you must use the quote. And apologies that this week’s inspiration is a tad more morbid, but everything in life isn’t always happy, and sometimes the most tragic of things can be the most beautiful.

I hope this prompt helps you out, and I would honestly recommend anyone to watch this film as soon as you can. And make sure to leave a comment in the Feedback page on your work or even something about Donnie Darko and I’ll get back to you- I love hearing from you all!

Happy writing!

Tuesday’s Inspiration #6- The Oh Hello’s

The Oh Hello’s are a band I discovered in November of last year, and I fell in love with them as soon as I heard their song The Truth is a Cave. It inspired me to write a few pieces (and also made me dance around my kitchen like I was doing a tribal ceremony but that is besides the point) so I would like to share it with you guys. You can view it on YouTube here:

As always, I would listen to it first. Just listen. Then write. I hope you all enjoy it, and feel free to share what you write or who your favourite artists are to get creative to!

Happy writing! (Or kitchen dancing. Depending on your preference.)

Tuesday’s Inspiration #5- Where My Feet Will Take Me

This week I’ve decided to go for another picture prompt, as these work well for me:

Tell the story of journeys you’ve been on from the perspective of your feet. Where have you been? Where are you going? Tell their story. Happy writing!

Tuesday’s Inspiration #4- The Bar Scene

We’re at an old bar on a lonely night, where two figures are the only people within. One sits on a stool holding a drink of some sort, and the other is the barman, standing behind the bar surveying the figure in front of him.
Write a script or short story showing the conversation these two are having. Who are they? Why are they here? Post your replies below or on the Feedback page and happy writing!

Tuesday’s Inspiration #3- Dustin O’Halloran

This is a breathtaking song composed by Dustin O’Halloran which is one of my favourites for writing. It was in fact this song that inspired me to write my post Silhouettes, and in turn I want to give you this song to inspire my fellow writers!

To gain the best effect, I’d suggest finding somewhere quiet and secluded to listen to this song. Plug in headphones, turn on HD, close your eyes and press play. The first way through, I don’t want you to do anything except listen to the music. Breathe in every chord, and once it is over, if you wish, repeat the process. Once you feel you are ready, grab a sheet and a pencil, and replay the song. Once it begins, I want you to take it in again, but this time write everything that comes to mind as it plays. Let your thoughts and feelings splash onto the page as the music washes over you. Replay it as many times as you want, and fill your page with every idea that springs to mind.

Once that is over, you can choose what you want from the notes you’ve made from the page, and you can create something. I’m sure your pieces will be as stunning as the music that flooded through your ears, and I can’t wait to see what you all come up with. Happy writing!

Tuesday’s Inspiration #2- Adventure Afoot!

'And here the path ended, and their journey began.'

‘And here the path ended, and their journey began.’

This week’s prompt is all about adventuring. Use this line in a poem or postcard story (up to 150 words maximum) to inspire yourself. Who is on the path? What are they leaving behind? And more importantly, what are they heading towards? Be sure to link me to your work via comments or the Feedback page- happy writing!

Tuesday’s Inspiration #1- Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s being just around the corner, I thought we’d start Tuesday’s Inspiration with a nice little theme- love. Now I know a lot of people absolutely detest Valentine’s Day, and I can understand that, so this prompt is not just surrounding Valentine’s, simply love in general. This week’s prompt is also inspired by an article I read a few weeks ago, where small children were made to describe what they think love is (you can read the article here).
I loved the sweet simplicity of the children, yet how innovative and deep their ideas were. And so I ask you to answer this question for me-
What is love?
What comes to mind when you think of love.? Write a short story or a poem showing what you believe love is, whereas it’s hope, pain, sorrow or sadness. Whether you’re spending Valentine’s with your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend or a room full of scruffy yet adorable stray cats, I think this is a great activity to write about. So much has been written about love, but what’s your take on it? Make it original, make it yours!
Happy writing!

New Feature- Tuesday’s Inspiration

Hi guys, I’d just like to pop in with another announcement for you all. Recently, I’ve been thinking of different ways I could make this blog a little better and also let it be helpful for other writers out there instead of just showcasing my own work all the time. Firstly, I’ve introduced the Feedback page, and now I’m introducing something brand new- Tuesday’s Inspiration. What is this magical thing I hear you ask?

Inspiration. Because what writer doesn’t need a bit of a spark on a Tuesday afternoon?

Tuesday to me has always been a day overshadowed by the rest. Monday is the daunting, dull start to the week that trudges slowly by and Wednesday is our half-way point to Friday which we stampede towards without looking back. With all that rush Tuesday is often overlooked, and passes without much memory. So what better way to make your Tuesday’s meaningful and worthwhile than by spending them writing?

So from now on, each week I’ll post a little bit of inspiration for you all, be it a song I think is good to write to, a picture or a simple text prompt. Prompts have been my friend for a long time, helping me get my mind working on something new, and I hope these little bits of inspiration can help you writers splash your talent onto page.

Make sure to stop by next Tuesday when the first post will be put up, and I hope you enjoy them all! If you have any suggestions for prompts or songs you want posted, fill a form in the Feedback page and I’ll make sure to get back to you. Have a go at them, and make sure to comment or link your work to me; I love reading stuff from the talents of the web. Happy writing, all!
